 Yu Kuramoto

Yu is an artist based in Rotterdam. She studied scenography and theatre directing at the Tama Art University, Tokyo, and graduated Piet Zwart Institute MA fine art in Rotterdam.

The work of Yu balances on the edge of the possibility and impossibility also deals with the negotiation between the public and private domain. The particular images of everyday objects, such as commercial signs, graphic designs and urban objects in public domain are often the starting point of her work. Her works evolve around removing something from the public domain into a more enclosed private artistic sphere, and shifting from public function to private meaning. Her eyes of an observer, her eyes as a stranger perform in the recent drawing works. She draws the scenes that she (actually) experienced as it is, as unassertive way as possible, which generates our silent thoughts.

Her past solo and group presentations include; Shadow performers, Galerie de Expeditie (Amsterdam), (Paul)Chiar(Vincent)Chair), Hommes (Rotterdam), totally useless – absolutely beautiful, Mirta Demare (Rotterdam), Wherein certain persons…, TENT. Centre of Contemporary Art (Rotterdam), Society, Beaconsfield (London) and Roads On, Bundesverband Bildender Künstler Köln e.V. (Cologne).

Tonio de Roover

Tonio studied at the Academy of Visual Arts Rotterdam and ENSAD Paris, France.

His work seems to refer to a function or an interior object, rather than being an autonomous work. The sculptures are carefully designed, minimal in its use of materials and constructed in simplicity. They are formal as well as romantic. The works are full of contradictions but also create a serene balance between design, sculpture and painting.

Tonio lives and works in Rotterdam. He is currently a guest artist at Kunst & Complex in Rotterdam.
